S4LEM is a witch house band that formed in Traverse City, Michigan circa 2006. The originators of witch house whose popularity spread through the music blog culture of the late 2000s and early 2010s, S4LEM initially consisted of three members: John Holland (producer/guitars/singer), Jack Donoghue (producer/rapper), and Heather Marlatt (singer).
The band took an indefinite hiatus around 2013, with Heather leaving (or being kicked out depending on the account) in the midst of a pregnancy right before John and Jack put out an album in 2020, Fires in Heaven. This return signified the true resurgence of witch house in the underground scene along with the popularity of other duos like Snow Strippers and Crystal Castles. The band's history is tumultuous, including a lasting friendship with actress Julia Fox, previous relationships with Lana del Rey and Courtney Love for Jack, and prison time for John. The influence of S4LEM is still widely seen in the "underground" music scene, or at least what seems to be popular among the youth, both sonically and visually, with artists like Ethel Cain and her sister E_DEATH paralleling their aesthetics.
S4LEM have put out two official albums, King Night (2010) and the aforementioned Fires in Heaven. They also have the official EPs Yes I Smoke Crack, Water and I'm Still in the Night, all put out between 2008-2011 as well as several DJ Mixes. However, they have a massive back catalogue of tracks that were released either on facebook, youtube, tumblr, or other blogsites and file-sharing sites like VK and google drive. There have been several bootlegs in circulation for around 15 years now, including Owleyes and FuCKT, but in 2021 I decided to sort and arrange a huge google drive folder that had been circulating for a while into a sequenced compiled bootleg which I uploaded to mega entitled SALEM RARES.
